Programs - Admissions Criteria

Individuals must have the ability or potential to live independently with minimal assistance. Minimal assistance by staff includes providing transportation and goal training for life-skills, social skills and employment opportunities. Mental challenges include those with mental retardation, such as Downs Syndrome, or related conditions, such as neurological disorders like Autism or Traumatic Brain Injury resulting from medical conditions such as stroke or brain tumor or from accidents such as near-drowning or automobile accident.

The following admissions criteria contain general guidelines for admission eligibility. Admission to any day habilitation and/or residential program will be based upon the ability to meet a candidate's needs, subject to approval by the board of directors after reviewing recommendations of the Admissions Review Committee.

General Admission Criteria

  • Age 22 years or over;
  • Level of functioning:
    • intellectual: mild mental retardation or higher.
    • adaptive: ABL currently 2 or higher with potential for 1 or 0.
  • Psychiatric involvement (in addition to MR, autism, related conditions): psychiatric disorders responsive to treatment;
  • Related conditions such as cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury
  • Autism spectrum disorders (Pervasive Developmental Disorders): individuals must be able to communicate with others;
  • Ambulatory, or mobile using adaptive equipment, and can perform self-help skills independently;
  • No criminal history that would constitute a risk to other residents;
  • No history of criminal sex offenses;
  • Level Of Need (LON) of 1 (Intermittent need for support) or 5 (Limited need for support) in most cases;
  • Ability to live in residence without 24-hour awake staff;
  • Ability to participate in group and individual behavioral and psychiatric treatment as needed;
  • Individuals under consideration for admission must have a desire to live independently, get along well with others, and help foster a group setting of cooperation, support, and productivity.
